We all need a routine

I’ve discovered in the last few days that I need a routine.

I don’t want a routine but I need one.

I need one because without my routine, I didn’t write — I just read and puttered around the house, doing laundry — or at least moving laundry from washer to dryer.

I discovered that if I didn’t write first thing in the morning, then I didn’t write.

I’m retired, I have the entire 24 hours or the 12 or so my eyes are open. So what’s with the routine/schedule BS — is that just an excuse for being lazy — or having no ideas.

No, it’s a routine I established when I was working — I’d get up at 5 to write. I didn’t have to be in my office until 8 but I got up, got myself ready and then sat down to write.

I still get up early. If I don’t, I feel like half the day is gone. Sometimes I have coffee with my daughter and we chat, sometimes I look at emails. Mostly lately I write — articles for Medium — trying to build my base…yeah, I’m a funny old witch.

The last few days, I lingered in bed, tired and achy — my back and hip hurt. I didn’t want to move, so I didn’t and the pain just hurt more — nuh-duh. And, therefore, nothing was written — did anyone miss my pearls of wisdom? — I think not.
