Why Go to a Writers’ Conference?
Sounds like a stupid question, huh?
But many writers don’t think they “need” to go to a conference on writing, “Why do I need go to a conference if it’s mostly about fiction, if I’m writing nonfiction?” Or the other way around.
There is so much to gain. Information on fiction writing can help if you’re focusing on creative nonfiction. Information on research for nonfiction topics is helpful with fiction set in any time period.
One of my first posts on Medium was a story about how I drove through a March snowstorm to get to a writers’ conference. I would share that old post with you but right now, I can’t find it. (Not to Medium PTB: a search ability for our own posts? I have close to 600 by now — including comments).
The point behind my writing it was that a writers’ conference (now. you can either use the apostrophe or not because it’s a conference of and for writers) was so important to me that I “weathered” crappy weather to get to it. But why?
1-The conference was one that I’ve attended yearly for almost twenty years.
2. The group is one that once had me as a board member and president and I want to continue to support it.
3. It’s full of friends and people who know what it’s like to write everyday and struggle to get your words…
