My Resolution for the New Year…

To have NO Resolutions.

My father always said I “never finish anything…” He would be surprised at my 500+ publishings on Medium — my several completed novels. And the fact I retired from nursing as a VP of Nursing (not that big of a deal, really). The fact I was STILL a nurse after 44 + years was the big deal.

Like millions of other hopeful people, I’ve made resolutions to start a new year — exercise, lose weight, write every day, be nicer. The last one is the only one I’ve been able to achieve (unless you talk to my husband).

Making resolutions sets one up for failure. Most of those resolutions are large, overwhelming, and undoable. We have Great Expectations and no thought of our own reality. “If I aim for the stars, maybe I’ll get there.” That’s the thought when we should aim for something closer to home.

As a student nurse I was taught to “care plan” for my patients — to set reasonable and achievable goals in a progressive path that will get the patient to the main goal, a goal that was reasonable for that patient. Many times this goal setting was done with input from the patient and/or family.

As a stroke patient, my main goal was to achieve some of my lost strength and balance. The work to do this was done slowly during my therapy sessions — from inpatient to outpatient.
