An Old Lady Walks into a Grocery Store…

An old woman walks into a grocery store. You can tell she’s old — her walking is hesitant; she has gray hair and is using a cane which she tries to prop in the small grocery cart. She goes down each aisle slowly; because of health and physical issues, she hasn’t meandered through a grocery store for — it seems like — years. And no Target or Marshalls or even Barnes and Noble.

So, she wants to see if there’s anything — please anything — that could boost her appetite. Recently she’d heard a doctor say something completely new — something she’d never heard during her overweight life: ”You can stop losing weight now.” Months of chronic back and shoulder pain along with Clinical Depression has done what no diet had been able to do. But now she needs to get her energy back — she needs to eat better.

Of course, the prices surprise her — her daughter’s been doing the grocery shopping. Since a shoulder replacement she’s not allowed to lift anything over five pounds, making filling a grocery bag sometimes difficult. But he wanders around looking at everything, hoping something would make her appetite go “Wow!”

She picks up the few things on her mental list and then goes to look at the baked goods. With Type 2 Diabetes and as an old RN, he knows she should bypass the cookies. But she reasons, at 76, how many more years did she have at…
